The baobabs along the avenue are remnants of a once-dense tropical forest that was largely cleared for agriculture. Their massive bottle-shaped trunks store water during the dry season, helping them survive in the semi-arid Menabe region.
Locally called "Renala," or "mother of the forest," baobabs hold cultural and spiritual importance for nearby communities. Protection and tourism help encourage reforestation, local income, and conservation awareness.
The site is accessible via the RN8 road from Morondava and is best visited at sunrise or sunset, when warm light highlights the silhouettes of the trees. Nearby attractions include Baobab Amoureux and Kirindy Forest.
